Penitente Canyon - World Class Rock Climbing

Today we take a close look at a very special natural feature in this area, Penitente Canyon.

Penitente Canyon offers world class rock climbing that attracts climbers from Canada, South America, Germany, France, Spain, Japan, Africa, and more. For the lucky people who live here this is just one more attraction that is practically in their back yard.

With over 300 different climbs that range from beginner to advanced it has something to offer every skill level.

The canyon offers great beauty for hikers and campers as well.

Penitente Canyon gets it name from the "Los Hermanos Penitente", a small sect of the Catholic Church who used the canyon as a place of worship.

The Saguache Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management administers Penitente Canyon. Contact them for more information.

Colorado Mountain Wildlife

One of the great joys of living on Colorado mountain land is the abundance of wildlife. These are pictures deer taken right off our deck last winter. There are two species of Deer in Colorado; mule deer or Mulies - with their rope-like tails, evenly forked antlers and extravagant ears. White-tails have smaller ears, antlers with a single main beam bearing smaller tines and their signature broad white tails.

Both species of deer are about four to six feet long and stand three feet or more high at the shoulder. The weights of large bucks range over 400 pounds, but does are only half that size. Adult males begin to grow antlers in the spring, they are used in a clash for dominance and breeding rights in autumn. Antlers are then shed in winter.

Mule deer are abundant statewide. White-tails have become increasingly common in stream side, woodland and nearby crop lands along the rivers of the eastern plains.

Deer are browsers, feeding mostly on woody vegetation, including twigs and leaves of shrubs and trees. They also forage on crops, especially corn. Because they eat little grass, they tend not to compete seriously with livestock or elk. (Species details from the Colorado Division of Wildlife)

Fall Colors - Lake City, Colorado

The fall colors here in Colorado are simply gorgeous. Today we bring you photos of the Aspen trees near Lake City Colorado.

The Quaking Aspen of North America is known for its leaves turning spectacular tints of red and yellow in the autumn of the year.

The American Aspen is also known as the Quaking or Trembling Aspen. Its scientific name is Populus Tremuloides.

Aspens grow in large clonal colonies derived from a single seedling, and spreading by means of their roots. Each individual tree can live for 40–150 years above ground, but the root system of the colony is long-lived. In some cases, for thousands of years.

Lake City is about 70 miles NW of South Fork and is in the most remote area in the U.S. Read the article in The Denver Post.

You now have an opportunity to own a beautiful piece of riverfront property along the Rio Grande River. The following 3 pictures are of the actual Colorado land we have to offer.

Known as the Rio Grande in the United States and as the Río Bravo del Norte in Mexico, this river is 1,885 miles (3,034 km) long and is the third longest river system in the United States.

The Rio Grande River is an American Heritage Designated River.

The parcels that we have on the north end of River Island Ranch actually share their north border with the national forest. This makes your property feel like thousands of acres. Walk out your backyard and into the National Forest. For more details, River Island Ranch.
